The summer season has drawn to a close and demand for caricaturing at live events eased off a little, meaning time can be spent on more diverse projects and I've freedom to travel.
On the 11th of September I'll be giving a guided tour of the Fizzers: 10 Years of Caricature exhibition. Places are available and can be booked for free via Social Circles Glasgow. There are still seven months left in the exhibition's run and further special events will be happening before the end of the year. Keep an eye on the What's On in Glasgow Museums for announcements.
Leiper Fine Art, venue for the Scottish showing of The Auld Acquaintance indyref cartoon exhibition I curated in 2014, will host a special event to mark the second anniversary of Scotland's historic vote on the afternoon of the 18th of September. I'll be drawing caricatures of gallery-goers.
One of the many organisations who supported The Auld Acquaintance was Escola Ermengol in Lledia, Cataluña. In the last week of September I'll be their guest as they open a new teaching facility in Balaguer. The school does an amazing job providing a wide variety of visual art classes as well as English language lessons for children and adults. The staff are a great group and I'm particularly looking forward to getting reacquainted with Paco, Matías, Željko and company.
Not long afterward I'll be returning to one of my favourite places on Earth, Saint-Just-le-Martel, France for their 35th Salon de la Caricature, du Dessin de Presse et d'Humour. I'll be there during the second weekend of the event and will deliver a presentation on CRNI's work in defence of cartoonists' freedom of expression.
Finally, this Hallowe'en the Citizens Theatre will present a play that reenacts the "Gorbals Vampire" incident of 1954, when school children roamed the Southern Necropolis seeking to destroy a seven foot tall, iron-toothed man they were convinced had abducted two small boys. This mass hysteria was blamed erroneously on American horror comics. I've been working all year with local primary and secondary pupils on artwork for display in the theatre as well as an original comic featuring short stories with the vampire character.
